On Friday, February 28th, Slippery Rock University sent out a campus wide email stating that all university spring break study abroad trips, scheduled to be March 8th - 15th, will be canceled due to the Corona Virus outbreak. According to the CDC, the Corona Virus, also known as COVID-19, was first discovered in Wuhan China, and has since been spread to 50 other international locations. The Slippery Rock email stated that there have been almost 84,000 cases in 52 countries and 2,300 reported deaths in 10 countries.
While the university stated that their reason for this decision was to keep students best interest in mind, some are still upset. Camryn Groth, a junior majoring in early education, was planning on traveling to Stockholm and Kristianstad. Groth voiced her opinions about the situation to me saying that “I am really disappointed for my trip being cancelled because it’s my last spring break trip I can take while in college since next year I will be student teaching”. While students like Groth are effected by this decision, she followed up by saying “Although I’m really upset, I know the university has our best interest”.
More updates to come as the university releases more information about the spring break travel decision.
